Chanel Tobler

Eating With My Hands & Feet is an exhibition of drawings by Chanel Tobler exploring the ambivalence of being in a place that is home in theory but not in actuality. Place, as used by Tobler, is a term interchangeable with self, others, and geographic locations. Tobler employs various entry points in her process, such as automatic drawing, as well as the engagement of memory & personal histories to overcome and make sense of the limbo land that is, ambivalence. Through these techniques, Tobler’s drawings mix the subconscious and conscious mind to map her lived experience in a gestural and abstract manner.

Tobler competed her bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School in Sydney, where she majored in ceramics and drawing. Since 2017, Chanel has completed the Heima Residency in Iceland, and exhibited in solo and group shows Australia wide. An ongoing interest across her practice is the psychological and emotional space within which our relationships to space, self and others occurs.
